A licensed real estate agent is only a Realtor if the agent belongs to the National Association of Realtors, the world's largest professional association. The term Realtor is a registered collective membership mark that identifies a real estate professional who is a member of the National Association of Realtors and subscribes to its strict Code of Ethics.

The most common type of realtor is a real estate salesperson or broker. As such, a realtor is licensed to help their clients purchase or sell their home. The realtor may earn other professional designations such as Certified Residential Specialist (CRS) or Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM).
